The song featured in the new FairPrice TV commercial was composed in 1988 and written in Mandarin to rouse the hearts of all Singaporeans. As the winning song for the NTUC Song Writing Competition, Voices From The Heart, or Xiao Ren Wu De Xin Sheng was very well-liked by the late Mr President Ong Teng Cheong. Apart from playing it for an audience on many occasions, he also had a part in translating the song to English. He promoted the song widely in NTUC, where it soon became the unofficial song for the workers.
The song has since become a popular tune to be sung on National Day. Covered by many vocal artistes, it was even used as a theme song in a popular Chinese TV series about the lives of everyday Singaporeans.
